We are so thrilled that our family has arrived!
December 25th brought our daughter, Jill, her husband, Shahak
and grandsons Benji and Evan from Maryland!
We enjoyed our day off with them!
Last Night
Evan helping Pa get the bike ready for today's ride!
Benji and Evan were excited to get to see
Glenn off this AM for the ride from Oceanside
to Laguna Beach. It was a beautiful morning!
Shahak and Jill join the send off!
Evan checking the mileage before Pa gets started!
Glenn got on his way at 9:17 AM to
head to Laguna Beach with sunny skies and
temperature of about 58 degrees!
Another form of biking at the beach!
They only went 2 mph so it would have taken them
a lot longer to get to Laguna Beach
Met up with Glenn about 2.5 miles before reaching
our destination for tonight. Great timing!
Unfortunately, Glenn's computer wasn't working today
so we don't have our usual stats but here is a map of the
route with mileage. The only problem today was a small one.
Glenn didn't know that it required 4 days notice and
submission of a form to ride through Camp Pendleton.
We were a little late to figure that out yesterday!
So Glenn researched and found out that he could ride on
The 5 for those few miles to pass the base.

It was a fairly easy ride although there was significant
traffic in the beach towns! We rendezvoused at the
hotel in Laguna Beach at about 12:30 PM.
Laguna Beach!
Nice to know that there is a bike shop
nearby for that occasional emergency!

We are still making all of our last minute plans for the
ride onto the Santa Monica Pier. It won't be long!
The ride tomorrow is from Laguna Beach to Venice Beach!
We'll have three mystery riders with Glenn tomorrow!!
Tune in tomorrow night to see who they are!
I know that most of you know why we do these rides
but for anyone who is not aware, here is some info that
might help you understand why this foundation is so
important to us....and to kids with cancer!
The Mission of I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation
We want to challenge the public’s acceptance that treatment for childhood cancer requires painful and embarrassing side-effects and life-long health disabilities, isolation from friends and family, and short and long-term psychological devastation. By educating the public about scientific breakthroughs in genetic childhood cancer research (targeted therapies) that are within reach but seriously underfunded, we can quickly raise money to fund research grants and provide seed money to researchers for new studies. By seeing how close we are to more humane treatment for childhood cancer, we know the public will demand better treatments, NOW.
In case you are wondering what targeted therapies are:
CHILDREN NEED TARGETED THERAPIES NOW TO KILL THE CANCER AND NOT THE KID:
Children with cancer need treatment breakthroughs NOW. They need new molecular-based targeted therapies that will “kill the cancer, not the kid.” Targeted drugs have proven to be an effective weapon in the war on cancer for adults, and one of the most promising treatments for the future.
HISTORICALLY, DRUGS USED TO TREAT CHILDREN WERE DEVELOPED FIRST FOR ADULTS:
Nearly all drugs currently used to treat children with cancer were developed for adult cancers and then found effective in children through clinical trials of lower doses. However, most types of childhood cancer are distinct from adult cancers at the biological and cellular level which is the key factor in developing targeted therapies. In other words, resources must be dedicated to pediatric research as they never has before. And yet, neither the government nor pharmaceutical companies are devoting resources to pediatric cancer research.
TARGETED THERAPY RESEARCH FOR ADULTS WILL NOT APPLY TO CHILDREN, DUE TO CELLULAR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ADULT AND CHILDHOOD CANCERS:
Research on targeted therapies for childhood cancer cannot wait for the approval of drugs developed for adult cancers because those drugs are not applicable on a molecular level. Due to this molecular distinction, pediatric cancer research must be pursued independently and with it’s own focused research effort. The benefits of this research WILL be applicable to adult cancers.

Such an amazing family! Who would have known years ago when Alison and Jill first met that our lives would have interwoven over the years as they have. So excited for Dr Hirsch to have everyone there to share in his victory!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lisa! We love you all too!
